国際合同生物学野外実習について

平成23年7月8日から14日までの7日間、西表島において、琉球大学主催、台湾大學(台北)、東海大學(台中)と台湾中央研究院の協力のもと、国際合同生物学野外実習を実施したので報告する。琉球大学熱帯生物圏研究センター西表研究施設を利用して行った本実習は、西表島の自然と生物多様性をテーマとしており、上記4機関から生物学を学ぶ学部生・大学院生17名に加え、今回ゲスト参加したボゴール農業大学の学生2名、さらに各機関の教員やスタッフ等24名の、計43名が参加した、国際色豊かな実習となった。

本実習では、サンゴ礁から山地まで様々な環境が小さな範囲に凝縮されている西表島の特徴を活かし、サンゴ群集および個体群研究の概説と入門的調査実践から、マングローブや山地の植生の観察、干潟における甲殻類相の調査や、自動撮影装置を用いたイリオモテヤマネコなどの陸生生物の観察方法の実践、小型鯨類の骨格試料を用いた骨格標本の構成など、多岐にわたる内容に取り組んだ。

本実習中の講義や解説、指導はすべて英語で行われたが、参加者は英語だけではなく、日本語、中国語、インドネシア語などを交えつつ実習の共同作業や課題への取り組み、さらには自由時間の活動を通して、非常に濃密な国際交流を行う事ができた。ここで得られた体験は、参加者が将来国際交流を進める上での大きな自信になるはずであり、また琉球大学としてもこのような機会を設けることで、これまで以上の国際交流が活発になることが期待できる。なお、本合同実習は琉球大学「アジア太平洋域の大学院生の国際連携教育プログラム」の支援を受けている。

この国際合同実習は台湾と琉球列島で交互に実施しており、第1回の昨年の実習は台湾で開催され、さらに来年度は再び台湾での実施が計画されている。

■国際合同生物学野外実習の概要

今回の国際合同実習は、琉球列島という生物学的見地から、国際的にも価値の高い立地条件を利用して、国際的な視野で研究を推進できる学生を育成しつつ、今後ますます多様化する環境問題や将来の国際共同研究を進める上で重要な国際的なネットワークの構築を推進するために、平成22年度より開始されたプログラムである。特に台湾と琉球は隣接する島嶼であるが、地形や面積が大きく異なることから、そこに見られる生物の生態や生物多様性には様々な共通点と相違点がある。そのため、両方のフィールドを体験することで得られる教育・研究上の意義は大きい。

琉球大学はアジア・太平洋地域における研究拠点形成を進めており、アジア諸国の大学と協力して国際サマープログラムを開催することで、学生のみならず教員の国際性を高め、異なる文化・環境での経験と知が集積されることを目指している。

1) 期間:2011年7月8日〜14日

2) 実習の実施体制:今回は前回の台湾で行った実習に続く第2回目の実施であり、琉球大学大学院理工学研究科海洋自然科学専攻・海洋環境学専攻(生物系)がホストとなり、台湾大學生命科學院、東海大學生命科學系,中央研究院生物多様性研究中心から、計43人の実習生や教員、ティーチングアシスタント(TA)が参加した。またゲスト参加として、ボゴール農業大学水産海洋科学部海洋科学技術学科からも参加者があった。参加者の内訳は以下の通りである。

3) 実施場所:西表島上原にある琉球大学熱帯生物圏研究センター西表研究施設をベースに、島内の様々なフィールドを利用して生態と生物多様性をテーマとする実習を行った。

■感想文

Summer Field Course on Ecology and Biodiversity in Iriomotejima. 8 -13 July 2011

This was our first experience joining summer course program. This course was about Ecology and Biodiversity in Iriomotejima. Before joining this course, we were sure that it would become interesting activities and we would get many things that we never had before.

This course gave us many advantages on improving our knowledge and experiences. We met many international students from Taiwan and Japan with different grade of education; i.e. Bachelor degree, Master degree, and Ph.D degree. Grouping all participants into several groups was a good way to strengthen our friendship because the interaction with other international student became more intensive. We also met several teachers (sensei) which have a very great passion in teaching, guiding, and giving us knowledge. The course is also a very good place to practice communication in English.

From that course, we got multidisciplinary knowledge. We learned about mangrove ecosystems, coral reef, Yamaneko photo trapping, skeletal preparation of whale and dolphin bone, biodiversity along Urauchi River, benthic invertebrates sampling and analysis on tidal flat. We learned many things both in the field and class room. In field, we learned how to get data from different ecosystems, after that we analyzed the data. In the last day, we did presentation. Skeletal preparation was interesting one for us because we never learned about it before.

After joining that course, we can conclude that Iriomote is a beautiful Island which has very high biodiversity. We really enjoyed every moment we spent in Iriomote. Getting new friends, new knowledge, and new experience in Iriomotejima were very impressed for me. Thank you for all teacher and committee which had made a brilliant program. We hope next year, this program could be held again.

“Irashaimase!” I stepped off of the plane into a country where suddenly I was the foreigner; I was the odd one out. Until then, I had never felt out of place before, or felt that even though I could hear I was deaf. Nervous and apprehensive, the program began, and introductions were made by professors, researchers, assistants, and students of various ethnicities and backgrounds. The sheer diversity of research fields astounded me. Mammals to insects, land to sea, diurnal to nocturnal. Amongst the company of these professionals, I felt so insignificant. Not only was I one of the few undergraduates, I was also the youngest. But all these feelings turned upside down in the matter of days. Working with the graduates and professors in the field opened my eyes to a world of biodiversity I had never imagined. Under the guidance of the Ryukyu University professors and assistants, I was able to explore the oceans, the mangroves, the rivers, and the mountains of Iriomote, and learn techniques, surveying methods, and fine-tuned my data analysis skills. I learned about mangrove and mountain plants. I identified numerous species of coral, creatures I had always disregarded as similar. I caught bethic invertebrates in tidal flats. I saw the power behind camera traps in surveying animals, such as the rare Iriomote cat. I experienced the charm of Urauchi River, and enjoyed the roar of the waterfall. I tasted the renowned Ishigaki beef. I bonded with everyone at the program, be it student or professor. We laughed, we created memories, and we promised to visit whenever there was a chance. This exchange program with Ryukyu University gave me an experience I will never be able to forget. I turned 20 during the program, and they created for me one of the most memorable experiences I have ever had, it is definitely a birthday I won’t forget. I have never been to anywhere as beautiful, and I’ll be hard pressed to find any other place that can exceed the natural beauty of this island. The first day I arrived, I found a newspaper with an article on ecology in the front page headlines, and it impressed me; Japanese people really do embrace nature and care for it. I was amazed at how well the biodiversity of animals and habitats had been protected. On a single ten minute walk to a convenience store near the research station, I was able to see flying foxes, song birds, owls, frogs, toads, crabs, spiders, salamanders, geckos, and insects of all sorts. It was so exciting, knowing that any time along the road there is life teeming, waiting to be discovered. I can honestly say I loved not only the program, but also the people I met, and I am so honored that I had the chance to work with Ryukyu University. This is an experience I will never forget, and will always cherish. Iriomote is such a treasure, guard it well my friends.

西表島での1週間は私にとって、多くの初めての経験と、大切な友人を与えてくれた大変貴重なものでした。初日は英語での会話や授業への緊張が大きく、1週間も続けていくことができるのかと不安に思いましたが、2、3日と経つにつれて全く気にならなくなりました。諸先生方の実習では、海、山、干潟など野外に出て行われたので視覚からの情報も非常に多くわかりやすかったですし、何より干潟で主に研究を行っている私にとって、多くの新しい野外調査の経験を得ることができました。マングローブ植物の観察や、浦内川で見た貴重な植物たちが大変印象に残っています。実習だけでなく、ナイトウォークや教室移動の際などにも、ヤエヤマセマルハコガメやシロハラクイナ、サキシマハブ、アイフィンガーガエルなど、多くのめずらしい生き物を観察することができ、西表島を訪れることができて本当に良かったと思いました。

最終日に石垣空港から飛び立つときには、この実習を通した台湾の学生たちとの交流は、私にとって初めての国際交流プログラムへの参加であるというだけのものではなくなっていました。皆、私のつたない英語を理解しようと一生懸命努力してくれましたし、それぞれの大学の話、興味のある本や活動の話、研究の話、将来の目標など、実習で疲れた体を気にも留めず、本当にたくさんの話をしました。1週間という大変短い期間ではありましたが、非常に濃密な友情関係を築くことができました。

わたしはこの実習を通して、多くの野外実習の経験と、大切な友人たち、そして今後国際交流を行っていくにあたっての自信を得ることができました。
