Her Excellency Ms. Venetia Sebudandi, Ambassador of the Republic of Rwanda in Japan, Visits the University of the Ryukyus

Ambassador of the Republic of Rwanda in Japan H.E. Ms. Venetia Sebudandi visited the University of the Ryukyus on May 18th and held a special commemorative lecture in Hall 215 of the Faculty of Law and Letters.

The lecture was held with the purpose of letting students learn more about Rwanda and its tourism industry. Conducted in line with the course “Theory in International Relations” offered at the Faculty of Tourism Management and Industrial Sciences, the event saw keen participation from Faculty Dean Yoshiro Shimoji, members of staff and students.

Held wholly in English, the lecture focused on current conditions in Rwanda by tracing the country’s development from its volatile past some 20 years ago when then President Juvénal Habyarimana was assassinated in 1994, sparking a wave of mass killings that led to what is known as the “Rwanda Genocide”. Despite this, Rwanda embarked on a path of modernization and rapid economic growth that led it to become the stable and secure country it is today, earning the reputation of being the “Miracle of Africa”. The lecture struck a chord with students by touching on topics such as tourism and MICE, as the audience learnt how these new industries are currently experiencing swift expansion in Rwanda. A video showcasing tourism in Volcanoes National Park, a natural habitat of wild mountain gorillas, was also screened to cap off what was an extremely significant lecture.

Following the event, H.E. Sebudandi paid a courtesy call to University President Hajime Oshiro, and both shared a conversation on deepening international collaboration with Rwanda.
