Information Engineering Student Volunteers Organize 3rd Beach Cleaning Activity

With the adage of “strength in continuity”, teaching and student volunteers from the Department of Information Engineering at the Faculty of Engineering of the University of the Ryukyus heartily engaged in the third annual beach cleaning activity at Nishihara Marine Park’s Kira-Kira Beach from 10 a.m. to 11.30 a.m. on 16th April 2017 (Saturday). Efforts by the volunteers ensured a litter-free beach ready for the beach’s opening day on the 23rd of April.

A total of 25 volunteers (2 teaching staff, 1 member of family, 2 first-year students, 1 second-year student, 8 third-year students, 4 fourth-year students, 4 Master’s students, 2 PhD students and 1 former student) collected floating debris and waste including unwanted plastic and metal scrap, empty drink cans, and plastic bottles. In collaboration with the class “Career in Practice” that was introduced from this academic year, event facilitator Takeo Okazaki from the Department of Information Engineering said he actively called upon students to participate in the event, and engaging in activities that contribute to the well-being of the local community has helped him to improve his foundational skills as a fledgling member of society. He added that he hopes to continue his contributions through diverse types of volunteer activities in future.
