Response Policy for Novel Influenza (A/H1N1) [no.19]
President, University of the Ryukyus
As reported on TV and in newspapers, Japan's first death caused by new swine influenza was confirmed in Okinawa Prefecture.
In our university, as of 9:00AM August 18, it has been confirmed there are 97 students and 6 faculty/staff members who have been infected by Influenza A (H1N1).
The university continues to take the following emergency measures and every student and member of the university is expected to act with careful attention:
- In case you have suspected symptoms of a cold such as fever and coughing, it is strongly urged to consult with a hospital in advance and follow the instruction BEFORE going to a hospital. It should be noted that, in the University Hospital, there are many inpatients and outpatients who are seriously ill, and it is necessary not to transmit infection.
As soon as infection is confirmed, it is strongly urged not to come to school and to stay home for five days. Please do not fail to report the office of the faculty you belong to as well as the Health Administration Center (098-895-8144) of the university.
Since Influenza A has infectious capacity even after alleviating fever, please stay home for another five days after fever has gone down. - For those who have close contact with students mentioned above (1), it is strongly urged to stay home as well.
- During the period of staying home, please try to avoid the crowds even around your house. You should be careful not to transmit influenza to others and not to be infected with influenza. When you need to go out, please take preventive measures by yourself including wearing masks and washing hands.
- There may be people around you who are pregnant, have asthma, or receives dialysis treatment for diabetes or medical treatment for malignancy. If those people are infected with influenza, it may cause severe diseases and it is very important not to transmit influenza to them.
When you come to the university, please take preventive measures by yourself including wearing masks and washing hands. - In case you have any symptom of a cold when the school begins after the summer vacation, it is strongly urged not to attend any class or engage in laboratory exercises based on your self-judgment about your health condition. Please report it to those concerned and follow (1) mentioned above.
- For the Faculty of Medicine and the University Hospital, emergency measures are given separately. Students and faculty/staff members should follow the instructions.
