Rector of the United Nations University Dr. David Malone Holds Lecture at University of the Ryukyus
On January 10, Rector of the United Nations University and Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations Dr. David Malone visited the University of the Ryukyus and held a talk with university President Oshiro. Following that, the “89th Edition of the University of the Ryukyus 21st Century Forum” was held under the theme of “Sustainable Development with the United Nations” at the 50th Anniversary Memorial Hall. The speech covered the United Nations’ (UN) unanimously agreed-upon sustainable development goals (SDGs) for the 15-year period between 2015 and 2030; specifically how part of these goals is also the eradication of poverty everywhere. The SDGs help confirm to all UN member countries that there are various goals in this area that each country needs to accomplish. In the speech, concrete examples were given as to how each country can meet these goals.
The forum and subsequent Q&A session were carried out in English, and over 60 participants including university staff and graduate students joined in a lively discussion as they listened intently to Dr. Malone’s message.
