Spa and Wellness Management Course, Faculty of Tourism Sciences and Industrial Management, Receives Award for Innovation

From September 7 to 9, Spa and Wellness Japan, the biggest spa exhibition in Japan, was held at a large Tokyo site. As part of the “Spa Crystal Awards 2015,” which is the award ceremony to announce the top spa of the year, spa and wellness management, a course offered in the Faculty of Tourism Sciences and Industrial Management at the University of the Ryukyus, received an award in the innovation category.

This award is given to an entrepreneur or for work to develop a new and innovative trial or practice in the Japanese spa industry. This is a first time that a university class has received this award. Although there are universities outside of Japan that have classes and majors related to spas, there were none in Japan. The University of the Ryukyus became the first in Japan when it started the spa and wellness management course in 2013. It is in its third year.

As a tourist resort destination, Okinawa Prefecture has promoted the development and preservation of the health industry, and spas have been a notable part of that effort. Since wellness tourism is a field that has grown spectacularly all over the world, developing human resources to support it is an urgent priority. Cooperating with the Nippon Spa Association (NPO) and the Okinawa Esthetic & Spa Cooperative Society, the University of the Ryukyus was able to develop this class in an omnibus style with instructors from the Faculty of Tourism Sciences and Industrial Management and others who are active on the front line in the spa business world.

The University of the Ryukyus, acting as a pioneer, aims to spread a wave of human resource development to related faculties at other universities in Japan, become a starting point for raising the quality of the recreation industry, and support sound development.
