The fundamental aim of the Graduate School of Law is to
develop attorneys who can serve the local community, but who
also have an international perspective. That is, making the
most of the geographical, cultural, and political characteristics
of Okinawa in our legal education. We educate our students
to be attorneys who can deal with the many diverse issues in
Japanese society today with a keen sense of humanity and a
cosmopolitan outlook. We concentrate not just on providing
our students with a comprehensive command of the law, but
also instilling in their sensitivity a solid sense of humanity. We
believe this to be essential for attorneys in terms of the wide
variety of legal issues they will face.
The basic legal subjects for training in technical legal
knowledge are compulsory. The professional basic subjects
for training in lawyer’s responsibilities, ethics, and basic legal
skills, will be taught by attorneys. We also offer fundamental-adjacent
subjects such as legal philosophy, island economics
etc., and developing pioneering subjects such as a hometown
lawyer course covering local government law, social security
law, bankruptcy law, etc., and an international lawyer course,
American legal research, English legal terms, U.S. military
base law, and related topics.
